Every hard-shell suitcase sold in India is made from one of three plastics: polypropylene, polycarbonate or ABS. Brands rarely explain the difference, which is convenient for them, because the difference is most of what you are paying for.
Here is the plain version.
ABS
ABS is the cheapest of the three and the most common at the bottom of the market. It is rigid and holds a glossy finish well, which makes it photograph nicely.
The problem is brittleness. ABS does not absorb impact - it resists it until it cannot, and then it cracks. Baggage handling is exactly the kind of repeated, unpredictable impact that ABS handles worst. It is also the heaviest of the three per unit of strength, which eats into your 7 kg cabin allowance.
Buy it if: you fly once a year and price is the only consideration.
Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate is the premium material most global brands market heavily. It is genuinely good: strong, reasonably light, and it flexes under impact rather than shattering.
Its real weakness is cosmetic. Polycarbonate scuffs and scratches easily, and on a glossy finish those marks show from the first trip. It is also the most expensive of the three, and a lot of that price is brand rather than material.
Buy it if: you want maximum rigidity and do not mind the shell looking used.
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is the material we build with, so read this with that in mind - but the engineering case is straightforward.
Polypropylene is lighter than polycarbonate at comparable strength. On a cabin bag with a hard 7 kg ceiling, that difference goes straight into what you can pack.
It also flexes further before deforming and returns to shape afterwards. Where ABS cracks and polycarbonate dents, polypropylene tends to absorb the hit and recover. It is naturally water-resistant rather than treated to be, and it scratches less visibly than gloss polycarbonate because the finish is typically textured.
The honest trade-off: polypropylene has slightly more flex than polycarbonate under heavy compression, so a badly overpacked bag will bow more. Pack sensibly and you will never notice.
One thing worth checking: virgin polypropylene versus recycled or blended. Recycled polypropylene is cheaper and noticeably more brittle. If a brand does not specify, assume it is not virgin.

What actually matters more than material
A great shell on bad hardware is still a bad suitcase. Before you compare plastics, check these:
- Wheels. Double spinner wheels roll straighter under load and last far longer than single wheels. This is the part that fails first on cheap luggage.
- Zippers. Anti-theft double-coil zippers resist being popped open with a ballpoint pen. Single-coil zippers do not.
- Handle. A telescopic handle that wobbles in the shop will wobble worse after twenty trips.
- Warranty. The length of the warranty tells you what the manufacturer privately believes about their own hardware.
